The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) government strongly condemned on Sunday the illegal acts of protesters over the weekend, which included vandalism, setting fires and damaging public facilities.

A government spokesperson said the police will investigate the incidents and bring the lawbreakers to justice.

The spokesperson noted that blocking roads, setting fires and throwing petrol bombs not only are illegal, but also disregard the rights of other members of the public. They are extremely selfish acts, he added.

He also noted that desecrating the national flag violates the National Flag and National Emblem Ordinance and offenders are liable to a fine and imprisonment for up to three years.

In response to online calls to disrupt airport operations on Sunday, the spokesperson said police and relevant parties worked together to adopt effective measures to ensure smooth operations at the airport.
