The first second-generation Yangtze finless porpoise bred in artificial environment celebrated its 100th day of birth on Saturday, at a breeding center in central China's Wuhan City, marking a giant breakthrough in dolphin breeding and protection sciences.
The female cub "F9C" was born on June 11, 2019. Her mother, Jiu Fu, is an 11-year-old porpoise who was introduced from Poyang Lake (in east China's Jiangxi Province) to the institute eight years ago. And her father, 14-year-old porpoise named Tao Tao, is the world's first finless porpoise bred in artificial environment.
In the summer of 2018, researchers succeeded in the copulation of Jiu Fu and Tao Tao, and the cub was born 10 months later. With the guidance of her mother, the cub has adapted to the pool's environment quickly.
Yangtze finless porpoise is a freshwater dolphin native to China. It is listed as critically endangered on the Red List by the International Union for Conservation of Nature.
