A rescued Asian elephant named Ran Ran gave birth to her first baby on Saturday in southwest China's Yunnan Province.

The elephant was discovered in 2005 in the woods with her left hind-foot stuck in an iron trap. She's been living in the Yunnan Asian Elephant Breeding and Rescue Center since then.

Two years ago, Ran Ran was found pregnant at the age of 15.

After 640 days' pregnancy, she gave birth to her first daughter over the weekend with the help of the center's staff.

The baby elephant, who is not named yet, is reportedly to be in good health. She measures 83 centimeters tall and weighs 68.2 kilograms. After opening her eyes for the first time, the elephant quickly got onto her feet, hungry for milk. As she was too short to reach her mother, the breeding center's staff had to get her a box to step on.

Asian elephants are under first-class national protection in China.
