On barren land dominated by deserts, the wind is the ultimate sculptor. Its force changes the landscape in dramatic ways, sweeping through the arid land, whipping up dust and sand and carving away at harder materials to create distinctive structures. These resulting landforms are known as "yardangs."

In the vast no man's land stretching along the border between northwest China's Gansu Province and the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, the yardangs have taken on some unusual shapes.
