The United Nations is the largest intergovernmental organization, with nearly 200 member states. However, the People's Republic of China had long been kept out of the organization after its founding in 1949. Despite being a founding member and one of the five permanent members of the UN Security Council, China struggled for more than two decades to rejoin the UN.
