Beijing Daxing International Airport, with the world's largest single-structure terminal, officially opened on Wednesday.

About an hour's drive from downtown Beijing, the mega-airport is connected via newly-built highways.

When CGTN arrived at the airport we found that processes to be running smoothly, with over 80 percent of check-in counters self-service and security checks moving quickly.

It provided a seamless experience for travelers, including an electronic boarding process. Passengers can simply walk through with their boarding passes, as the cameras installed beside each boarding pass could read faces and confirm the identity of the passengers.

Seven airlines made their first flights at the airport on Wednesday, including three of China's major airlines – China Southern Airlines, China Eastern Airlines and China Airlines.

They dispatched their best fleet, including an Airbus 380s from China Southern Airlines, which is set to take 40 percent of the air transport capacity at the airport.

"The construction of Beijing Daxing International Airport is a major move to fulfill our double hub strategy. We now expect to accommodate more travelers from Europe and the U.S. as well as from Japan and South Korea," said Bao Xincan, a deputy manager with China Southern Airlines.

Regular flights will begin in late October when the number of daily flights is set to reach 100. The airport is expected to handle 72 million passengers annually by 2025.
