Chinese companies have made significant purchases of soybeans and pork from the U.S., said Chinese Commerce Ministry (MOFCOM) spokesperson Gao Feng on Thursday, adding that China has a high demand for high-quality agricultural products, and China and the U.S. have a broad space for cooperation in agricultural products.

Chief negotiators from China and the United States plan to hold high-level trade talks next month in Washington, DC. That follows deputy-level trade talks in Washington last weekend.

"The two teams seriously discussed the specific arrangements for the 13th high-level meeting at the deputy ministerial-level meeting. They are now maintaining close communication, and making preparations for the upcoming talks," said Gao.

Gao noted China's stance is consistent. Beijing wants to find a win-win solution with the U.S., based on equality and mutual respect.

The most recent round of high-level trade talks were held at the end of July. Both sides called the talks "constructive," but then U.S. President Trump unexpectedly announced he planned to add an additional 10 percent of tariffs on Chinese exports with a value of 300-billion U.S. dollars. After this bombshell, trade talks were put on hold and just-resumed Chinese purchases of American agricultural products were cut off.

However, the latest deputy-ministerial level meeting seems to have thawed the frozen trade negotiations. And both sides are sending out positive signals ahead of the high-level trade talks.

China to release another 10,000 tonnes of pork from state reserves

The MOFCOM also stated on Thursday that another 10,000 tonnes of pork from its central reserves will be released to ensure meat supply for the upcoming National Day holiday.

The meat market supply is generally guaranteed, and China will continuously do a good job to ensure meat supply, said the spokesperson.
