China opposes the U.S. deployment of intermediate-range missiles on its doorstep, Chinese Foreign Minister spokesperson Geng Shuang said Friday in response to a question regarding Russia's proposal.

The proposal, sent by Russian President Vladimir Putin, calling on leaders of European and Asian countries and international organizations not to deploy missiles previously banned by the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty (INF), said the Kremlin on Thursday.

Geng confirmed receiving the proposal, adding that China has made its stance clear on this matter.

"China calls on all parties concerned to exercise restraint and prudence," said Geng, warning that the deployment will have a negative impact worldwide, including severely weakening mutual trust, threatening the peace and security in Europe and the Asia-Pacific region and undermining global strategic balance and stability.

On August 2, Russia formally announced the termination of the INF treaty signed in 1987 after the United States officially withdrew from the treaty after a six-month notice.
