Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Thursday stressed that he would convey the message that China firmly stands on the side of multilateralism, the United Nations and the right side of history during the United Nation General Assembly (UNGA) General Debate.
Wang made his remarks when meeting with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.
Multi-polarization is an inevitable trend as every country in the world has the right to develop, the Chinese foreign minister said and added multi-polarization needs to be realized through multilateralism.
He stressed the symbol of multilateralism is the purpose and principle of the UN Charter.
Wang told Guterres that China supports the UN to play a more active role, supports the secretary-general's work and abides by the UN Charter.
"Multilateralism represents the future and unilateralism is unsustainable."
As next year marks the 75th anniversary of the founding of the UN, Wang said China is willing to take this opportunity to further strengthen cooperation with the UN to jointly open up a better future for the world.
Guterres for his part noted that the world is at a critical comment. He mentioned this year's UNGA General Debate shows that there are two tendencies in the world: One is the adherence to multilateralism and international law, the other is the rise of unilateralism and protectionism.
Saying China has a crucial role in building a multipolar world, the UN chief thanks the Chinese government for its strong support and good cooperation with the UN.
He also appreciates China's important contribution to the international poverty alleviation, tackling climate change and the building of a green Belt and Road.
UN wishes to continue to deepen cooperation with China in maintaining peace, security and sustainable development and expects China to continuously play a leading role in fields like climate change.
