The 2019 World Weightlifting Championships drew to a close following 10 days of intense competition as perennial winner China again took home the trophies with relative ease.

The showpiece event in Pattaya, Thailand, saw China top the medal chart in 10 categories, leading all nations with 53 medals, including 29 golds, 14 silvers and 10 bronzes.

The rich haul of medals are the most ever for a Chinese team in a world championship, beating the previous high of 29 golds, 9 silvers and 6 bronzes from Chiang Mai, Thailand in 1997. 

The Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) finished second with 24 medals (7 golds), ahead of Georgia, which completed the worlds with 7 medals (5 golds) to rank third among all nations.

In the final event for Team China on Friday, Li Wenwen exuded utter dominance and swept all three golds in the women’s 69kg.

The 19-year-old youngster set a new world record in the clean & jerk with her lift of 185kg and took away the total record of 331kg held by Russian star Kashirina Tatiana.
