Russian President Vladimir Putin visits Saudi Arabia, Nobel Peace Prize winner is to be announced and Poland starts parliamentary elections.

Putin visits Saudi Arabia

Russian President Vladimir Putin will visit Saudi Arabia in the middle of October, a chance to deepen cooperation on energy and boost arms sales.

"I am sure that the Russian-Saudi top-level meeting will give a fresh impetus to our multifaceted partnership, allow it to reach a new level, boost mutual understanding between the two peoples," Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov told Arab-speaking media, as quoted by the Russian Foreign Ministry.

The minister said that the bilateral ties may further intensify in the fields of industry, energy, agriculture and infrastructure.

"One more achievement is our close coordination on the situation in the global oil market," Lavrov added.

Putin said in September that Russia is ready to help Saudi Arabia following attacks on the Saudi oil industry and proposed Russian weapons to protect the country's infrastructure facilities.

Putin paid his first visit to Saudi Arabia in February 2007, during which the Russian leader met with former King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz Al Saud.

Nobel Peace Prize

The Nobel Peace Prize for 2019 will be announced at a press conference on October 11 at the Norwegian Nobel Institute.

There are 301 candidates for the 2019 Nobel Peace Prize — 223 individuals and 78 organizations, and one of the names that has frequently come up is Swedish teenager Greta Thunberg.

At 16, she would be the youngest recipient of the 930,000 U.S.-dollar award won by the likes of Nelson Mandela, Jimmy Carter and Mikhail Gorbachev.

Pope Francis, the United Nations Refugee Agency and its head, Filippo Grandi, are also mentioned among contenders for the prize in recognition of their work towards refugees and as a way to highlight the right to asylum.

Poland holds parliamentary elections

Poland will hold its parliamentary elections on October 13 and most pollsters expect the ruling Law and Justice (PiS) party to win thanks to its generous social spending and the country's robust economic growth.

Voters will elect all 460 members of the Polish Sejm and all 100 senators.

According to the latest polling data, PiS would attract 47 percent of votes, versus 28 percent for the main opposition group Civic Coalition.

Debate in the campaign is likely to focus on LGBT rights, a hot issue in the devoutly Catholic nation of 38 million, and social benefits as well as air pollution and energy.
