Naomi Osaka's victory at the China Open continues a successful season that started with her second Grand Slam title at January's Australian Open, which followed last year's breakthrough at the US Open. Her victory in Melbourne helped the Japanese become the first Asian to rise to World Number One, and before her latest triumph in Beijing, she talked to CGTN Sports Scene's Wang Dong for a special edition of Beyond The Baseline.
After creating sensation by winning the US Open last year, Osaka made a winning start to this year's Grand Slam events as she went on to win the Australian Open. However, she struggled for a while after her success at the Melbourne Park.
Everyone knows that I started off really well in Australia and then had the dip in the Europe season. I think I am finding my form again, just being more confident, playing better and haven't lost a match in the Asian tournaments so far," Osaka told CGTN.
She took the world of tennis by storm with her fabulous win over Serena Williams in the final at Flushing Meadows last year. She told CGTN, "Just to have that very early in my career is quite promising. I just hope I keep going."
Osaka has already proved her critics wrong who predicted that she might be an one Grand Slam wonder. For her, it wasn't never a fluke as she has been targeting a major for a long time. "I expected to win a Grand Slam when I was 18. You always have high goals for yourself," 21-year-old Osaka mentioned.
However, she has come of age and ready to withhold the pressure of the highest level.
"It doesn't really bother me anymore. I think it did right after I won the Australian Open. But I am sort of adjusted to that now. I think that sort of privilege that people talk about you, I hope that I can keep that going."
