To celebrate the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China (PRC) and present a panoramic view of the country's great journey, the 24-episode documentary "On the Road" focuses on the great achievements and valuable experiences of people of all ethnic groups in the socialist revolution, construction and reform over the past 70 years. It also recounts the touching stories and important events of the country since 1949.
The second episode of the series is centered in how the legal system for women's rights protection has been subjected to constant improvement during the past years.
After its founding on October 1, 1949, the PRC has gone through several difficulties to strengthen its hold on power. Many changes happened in the society and with the issuance of the PRC's first law, the Marriage Law, Chinese women had more say on their life.
On May 1, 1950, the new government issued its first law – the Marriage Law. Under it, the unequal system of feudal marriage in practice for thousands of years was abolished. Women were given the freedom to choose their husband. Now that couples could marry for love, weddings became occasions of great joy.
It was said that the women of the New China appeared younger and prettier than before.
Women were becoming actively engaged in socialist development. In many industries, female workers were given jobs alongside the men. Now and then, the idea that "women can hold up half the sky" prevails.
