8 dead, millions evacuated as powerful Typhoon Hagibis hits Japan

At least eight dead, 24 missing after the powerful Typhoon Hagibis lashed Japan, leaving almost half a million homes without power, local media reported. /VCG Photo

The record-breaking typhoon made landfall on the Izu Peninsula, southwest of Tokyo, on Saturday evening. Over six million people were urged to evacuate earlier in the day, with public transport suspended, shops shuttered and the streets empty. /VCG Photo

Local authorities lifted rain and flood warnings for towns and cities in 12 prefectures including areas in Tochigi, Ibaragi, Fukushima, Miyagi, and Niigata. JMA also urged the public to remain vigilant for rain and gusts. /VCG Photo
