On October 10, 2019, an adult brown bear was spotted near Yushu City in Yushu Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of northwest China's Qinghai Province.

A photographer who was taking areal shots of the city discovered the brown bear. He said he was stunned seeing the bear roaming among the bushes no more than 500 meters away from downtown.

He then manipulated the remote control of his drone to track the giant mammal and caught video footage of the bear hunting for food, playing and resting.

It's the first time a brown bear was spotted near the city's urban district.

"In recent years, especially since the national park scheme was piloted, we have seen an increasing awareness among herdsmen of protecting the ecological environment. What's more, the whole Qinghai-Tibet Plateau has become more wet and moist, helping the local vegetation to better recover, so that brown bears can expand their range of activity," said Lian Xinming, associate research fellow with the Northwest Institute of Plateau Biology under the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS).
