Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) police have again strongly condemned destructive acts during city protests over the weekend, saying the stakes have been raised by the appearance, for the first time, of a homemade bomb.

On Sunday night, an improvised explosive device (RCIED) – controlled remotely by a mobile phone – was detonated just two meters away from a police vehicle in Mong Kok district, the police said.

Such tactics, represented by the IED, bear a high resemblance to terrorist acts, according to a police statement released during a routine press conference.

Also on Sunday, a police officer was stabbed in the neck from behind by a masked attacker at Kwun Tong subway station.

In a separate case, rioters threw up to 20 Molotov cocktails within 20 seconds toward the Mong Kok police department.

Eyewitnesses said they observed rioters attacking police officers, throwing petrol bombs, vandalizing metro stations and smashing shops during the weekend protests.

Police say they arrested a total of 201 people between October 11 and 13. Officials vowed to continue to take resolute enforcement action to safeguard the city's public safety and bring all lawbreakers to justice.
