With the onset of the rainy season, water in Poyang Lake starts to rise up. Part of the Yongwu Road, which is the only road connecting Wucheng township to other towns and counties, is submerged under water, becoming "the most beautiful road under water."

As one takes an evening drive down this flooded road, the water splashes around as the lights of dusk paint the entire lake in yellowish orange hues. It almost resembles a scene from the famous Japanese animation Spirited Away, although this path will not lead you to the witch. The 5-kilometer-long magical road cuts the lake into two different tones, presenting a distinct sight for the tourists. 

Yongwu Road connects Wucheng locals with the outside world. Boasting a history of 2,200 years, Wucheng is one of the oldest townships in China. It is located in the southeastern part of Jiujiang City in China's Jiangxi Province.

Despite the mesmerizing views, not all locals are fascinated by this road, as flooding brings its due share of inconveniences. One can always take a boat to commute but it means higher transportation cost and the risk of catching schistosomiasis, also known as snail fever and bilharzia. The locals have to make do until the dry season when the water level decreases and the road reappears. 

Poyang Lake is the largest freshwater lake in China. The wetlands in the surroundings are a haven for migratory birds during winters.
