Thursday marks China's 6th National Poverty Relief Day. The country has lifted 770 million people out of poverty in the past four decades, which was an achievement unmatched anywhere else.
Santai, an agro-centric county in Sichuan Province, has been developing modern industries over the years and has increased the value-added of farming with technology.
Jing Yong, director of the Modern Agricultural Industrial Park in Santai, said that the county has been developing a modernized agricultural industry system with its dominant agricultural productions, such as planting Ophiopogon – a traditional medicinal herb, and plans to develop a larger-scale planting base.
Jing mentioned that the county is also developing its culture-related business with the help of digital technology. "And we have promoted development of our cultural industry," he added.
The United Nations defines extreme poverty as "severe deprivation of basic human needs" such as food, safe drinking water and proper sanitation facilities. That widely refers to an income below the international poverty line of 1.90 U.S. dollars a day. Extreme poverty in China mainly covers those with an annual income of less than 4,000 yuan.
Idris Salim, a planning officer with the Kenyan government, noted that the internet and e-commerce has helped reduce poverty.
He also suggested that e-commerce and social media integrate and take the advantages of information technology to further contribute to the poverty alleviation in the country.
