A black rhino calf recently born at a breeding base in Qingyuan City of south China's Guangdong Province is showing signs of vitality and growth.

The black rhino was born on October 2, 2019, weighing 34 kilograms. Half a month later, it's weighing nearly 51 kilograms.

"Its main job every day is to feed, sleep and play. It follows its mother every day. When it is hungry, though its mother is sleeping, it will use its horns that haven't grown yet to push its mother and let its mother stand so as to get milk," said Wen Yuexiong, a breeder.

According to breeders, after more than five years of growth and development, the weight of a black rhino will reach 800 to 1,400 kilograms. Their life span is about 45 years, and they can run at a speed of 45 kilometers per hour.

Due to poaching and reduction in suitable habitats, the number of black rhinos has fallen sharply since the second half of the 20th century, and their survival is under serious threat.

The black rhino is currently listed as "Critically Endangered" species by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
