Dozens of global CEOs gathered in Shanghai on Sunday for the 31st annual meeting of the International Business Leaders Advisory (IBLA) Council. The meeting was focused on enhancing the city's capacity and core competitiveness, as heads of global enterprises offered their valuable advice and suggestions.

Enhance the city's capacity and core competitiveness

After decades of rapid expansion, Shanghai is now home to thousands of global companies and institutions. Since 1989, global CEOs have annually gathered in Shanghai to offer their expertise to the city's mayor.

Robert E. Moritz is the Global Chairman of PwC. He said the city should take more measures to introduce the right talents.

Around 33 global CEOs attended the meeting. Free Trade Zones, IP protection and technology innovation were some of the buzzwords that many mentioned. As a first-time attendee, Johnson Controls' Chairman George Oliver felt excited about offering his suggestions on developing Shanghai into a smarter city.

George Oliver of Johnson Controls told CGTN that Shanghai should know how to better use the data, using new platforms of data in particular, to really enhance experiences in accommodation, work, learning or recreation. He thinks it is an opportunity to reinvent this incredible city by utilizing technology and data.

At its founding, the council had only 12 members from seven countries. Today, it has grown into a true international think tank. While the early councils were dominated by business leaders from manufacturing industries, today's panels have been expanded to include finance, pharmaceuticals, and technology among other sectors.

The 2019 IBLAC Chairman Michael Diekmann said suggestions proposed by the members address some very specific issues and could make life easier for businesses.
