Netflix to invest in Indian storytellers to bring women voices to life

Global entertainment service provider Netflix plans to invest in Indian stories and storytellers and to be home to the best stories on women, officials with the company said during the on-going Mumbai Academy of Moving Image (MAMI) Mumbai Film Festival late Saturday.

"As we deepen our investment in stories and storytellers from India, we are determined to bring to life more smart, vibrant and fully-realized female characters...who are funny, fierce and fantastically flawed," said Srishti Arya, director for International Original Film-Netflix India.

At Netflix, diversity is the beating heart of the storytelling and inclusion is essential to programming for 158 million members around the world, she said, sharing her views at a panel discussion on Women in Entertainment during the film festival.

With subscription-based membership in over 190 countries, Netflix provides TV series, documentaries and feature films across a wide variety of genres and languages on any internet connected screen.

Celebrating the diverse cinematic voices of India, MAMI Mumbai Film Festival is organized by the Mumbai Academy of Moving Image (MAMI), which was founded by a group of film industry stalwarts in 1997 to engage film lovers from all walks of life, and to foster an ideal climate of good cinema across the country by presenting the best of global and Indian cinema.

The week-long festival from October 17-24 is screening 190 films from 54 countries in 49 languages including features, documentaries and short films this year.
