Western politicians and media are keeping silent on the violence in Catalonia and London, compared with their broad coverage on the so-called "pro-democracy activities" in Hong Kong despite that they are growing to be alike, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying said Monday.

Hua made the remarks when responding to the recent violence in Spain's Catalonia and the UK's capital London. Protesters blockaded airports and smashed up shops, claiming they are "copying Hong Kong's riots" while Western politicians and media are taking an apparently different attitude by remaining silent so far.

The different attitudes towards the same things, according to Hua, once again indicated that so-called democracy and human rights are merely excuses for the West to interfere in Hong Kong's affairs.

There should be only one standard and one attitude towards any illegal and violent activities, Hua reiterated, adding that holding double standards will only end up harming themselves, referring to the "show" played by some of the Western politicians who claimed violence in Hong Kong is "beautiful scenery."

Regarding the recent protests, Hua said that China hopes relevant countries can properly handle their problems within the legal framework.
