A new draft of the marriage and family section of the civil code has been submitted to the ongoing bimonthly session of the National People's Congress Standing Committee. For years, debt has been jointly paid off by divorcing couples regardless of who accrued it. But in 2018, the Supreme People's Court issued a judicial interpretation on the Marriage Law, clarifying the division of debt by "joint debts, both signatures," which means husbands and wives should not have to pay for their partner's excesses.
