Former Taiwan's lawmaker Joanna Lei said its Democratic Progressive Party saw the case of Hong Kong murder suspect Chan Tong-kai an opportunity for political gains. Chan said he is ready to surrender himself to Taiwan authorities, which have issued an arrest warrant for him over the murder of his girlfriend, after his early release from prison in Hong Kong. Chan is spending time behind bars in Hong Kong on money-laundering charges. Lei said that Taiwan's initial reaction was to push the ball back to Hong Kong's court, and expressed belief that the only way to achieve justice is by bringing Chan to trial in Taiwan where the crime was committed and evidence secured.
