China on Thursday reiterated its stance on the detainment of a Japanese national in China, saying all violations are handled properly in accordance with the Chinese laws and foreign citizens should abide by the same during their stay in the country.

The officials have confirmed detaining a Japanese university professor on suspicion of spying. According to local media reports, the man has previously worked for the National Institute for Defense Studies (NIDS), Japanese defense ministry's core policy research arm, as well as the Japanese foreign ministry.

"We have informed the Japanese side on this matter and offered necessary assistance and convenience based on the Agreement on Consular Relations between Japan and China," Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Hua Chunying said during the regular press briefing.

At an earlier briefing, the spokesperson dismissed concerns that this case might affect China-Japan relations, saying that such interpretation or speculation is surely an exaggeration and there is no need to link an isolated case with overall relations.
