A car crash in Shanghai on Thursday morning left five people dead and nine others injured, local authorities said.

At around 9:25 a.m. local time, a white sedan rammed into an SUV, three non-motor vehicles and several pedestrians on Jinshajiang Road in Putuo District. 

The 63-year-old driver named Chen is among the nine injured, all of whom are under treatment at a hospital.

The crash took place shortly after a hit-and-run at around 9:21 a.m. when Chen jumped the light at the intersection of Daduhe Road and Nujiang Road, hitting a taxi and an electric bike, officials said. An investigation has been called to ascertain the cause of the initial incident.
