The Kumtag Desert Scenic Spot is located at the southern end of Old  Shanshan Town, northwest of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. With an area of 1,880 square kilometers, it is 270 kilometers away from the capital city of Urumqi, bordering Hami in the east, Turpan in the west, Kumtag Desert and Ruoqiang in the south. Consisting of a vast  desert, ancient jungle trees, springs and lakes, it is a natural center of recreational sports, such as sand skiing and camel racing. It is also host to numerous international sporting events.
