The first milk bank in Kenya was set up at Pumwani Maternity hospital in Nairobi on Wednesday, with the aim to help save the lives of newborns. The project is a first of its kind in east Africa. /VCG Photo

Although infants benefit most from their own mothers' milk, the milk from donors – if collected and pasteurized safely – is also a good alternative. So far, 75 infants have received nutrient-rich breast milk from about 400 donors. /VCG Photo

Other African countries including South Africa, Mozambique, and Cape Verde, also have milk banks. /VCG Photo
