FIBA announced on November 1 the eight teams qualified for Tokyo Olympics where 3x3 will make its debut on July 25-29 next year. China's men's and women's teams are both listed.

The women's category will have Russia, China, Mongolia and Romania, while the men's competition will see Serbia, Russia, China, and host nation Japan, according to their FIBA 3x3 Federation Rankings.

There will be eight teams per gender playing at the Olympics, meaning among the eight quotas left, six will be first granted to those who win via the Olympic Qualifying Tournament to be held in India in March, 2020, then the last two via the Universality Olympic Qualifying Tournament to be held in Hungary in April next year.

All players who wish to join the game should register with FIBA 3x3. The rankings of both genders are calculated by adding up the FIBA 3x3 Individual World Ranking points of the top 100 nationals per gender from the last 12 months.

The Chinese teams have staged excellent performances since their establishment. Both the men's and women's teams won champion titles in the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta. China's women's team won the FIBA 3x3 Women's World Cup, becoming the first Chinese team to win a basketball world champion title.

Before 3x3 launches in the Olympic Games, the best ever Olympic basketball show by Chinese was the women's silver in the 1992 in Barcelona, and the eighth place by the men's side in 1994 in Atlanta, 2004 in Athens, and 2008 in Beijing.
