Tank Shanghai launched the exhibition of "Convex/Concave: Belgian Contemporary Art together with Belgian WIELS contemporary art center" on Thursday. 

The exhibition is part of the ongoing 21st Shanghai International Art Festival and by far the largest of its kind in terms of Belgian art in China. Tank Shanghai is one of the city's newest landmark art museums.

The exhibition presented artworks of 15 of the most well known and representative Belgian contemporary artists, including paintings, sculptures and installation art. It outlines the overall development of contemporary art in Belgium, which plays an important role in the contemporary art world.

Dirk Snauwaert, the curator of the project, said that the exhibition touches the historical and cultural connection between China and Belgium from the perspective of art.

Among these artworks, several paintings titled Shanghai, drawn by Belgian artist Francis Alys during his trip to Shanghai in 1997, are regarded as gifts for the city.

"Shanghai holds an iconic place in twentieth-century popular culture. And the city has always been the paradigmatic imagery palace in the eyes of Europeans," said the artist.

The exhibition will close on January 12, 2020.
