Holding an annual international import expo is one of the key steps China has taken to further open up its market to the world. The fact that the promises President Xi Jinping made a year ago — including the expansion of the Shanghai Pilot Free Trade Zone and the adoption of pre-establishment national treatment and a negative list — have been fulfilled over the past 12 months demonstrates China's sincerity to share with the world the opportunities provided by its development.

China's president went a step further at this year's import expo by calling on all countries to work together to expand the global market for their shared benefit by building an open world economy through cooperation and innovation. He said that as part of this process, all countries need to join hands and tear down the walls between them.

In his speech, President Xi spoke about measures China will take to lift the country's opening-up to an even higher level. These include encouraging bold trials and experiments in pilot free trade zones, speeding up the development of the Hainan Free Trade Port, further improving the business environment by removing major constraints on economic development, and advancing Belt and Road cooperation.

An open and economically resilient China has been contributing more than 30 percent of the world's economic growth each year over the past few years. President Xi has given his commitment that China will open its door wider to the world at this new historical starting point, and that a more open market will generate greater opportunities that will contribute to the construction of a more open world economy.
