It is a tradition for workers and hundreds of local volunteers to gather at the Potala Palace in Lhasa to give the ancient palace a facelift every year. They believed that being part of the work could bring good luck to themselves and their families. /VCG Photo

In previous years, many local volunteers brought their own materials such as milk, sugar, and saffron to paint the wall. This year, the palace prepared the painting material in advance and also invited Buddhist monks to chant scriptures, praying for the painting process to go on well. /VCG Photo
