A spokesperson of the Chinese embassy in Germany slammed the remarks made by U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo in Berlin, terming them as a product of "Cold-War mentality and zero-sum game mindset."
The top U.S. diplomat had attacked the Communist Party of China and the Chinese government on Friday.
"China expresses strong dissatisfaction and firm opposition," the spokesperson said in a statement, adding that the purpose of the U.S. diplomat was to drive a wedge between China and Germany and other European countries.
"The current era is full of challenges and increasing risks, and unilateralism and protectionism pose a serious threat to world peace and stability," said the spokesperson.
"Under such circumstances, China is willing to strengthen strategic communication and coordination with Germany, and uphold mutual respect, mutual trust and mutual benefit, so as to make contributions to world peace and development," the spokesperson added.
