Brazilian footballer Taison has become the latest victim of racism in world football, after the Shakhtar Donetsk captain was the target of racist slurs during a Ukrainian Premier League match against Dynamo Kiev on Sunday.
Brazil international Taison led a counter-attack in the 74th minute and the move came to an end when he tripped Dynamo defender Artem Shabanov. From that corner of the stadium, Dynamo fans directed racist chants at the forward.
He was sent off for "unsporting behavior" after he reacted to the insults from away supporters in the 74th minute of the match at his club's home ground. After a series of repeated racist insults hurled at the Brazilian, he lost his cool and gave them the finger before kicking the ball at them. After he was red-carded by the referee, Taison broke down and left the field in tears.
However, the footballer, who joined Shakhtar in 2012, was consoled by Dynamo players. His fellow teammate and compatriot Dentinho too couldn't control his tears when the shameful incident took place in the ground. While reacting to the incident, Shakhtar coach Luis Castro said, "Racism is a disgrace, we have to fight it together, every minute and every second."
Later Shakhtar issued a statement and wrote, said that it "categorically opposes any form of racism", adding that "nothing can justify insulting people because of their skin colour, their religion or their political opinions".
Despite the racism controversy, Shakhtar, who are in the hunt for their fourth straight title, went on to win the game 1-0, ensuring their position as the league leaders, two points ahead of Zorya.
