Hong Kong Police said rioters blocked roads in different parts of Hong Kong on Tuesday, destroyed the major transport system in Hong Kong, set fire and destruction in the universities, threw petrol bombs at public facilities and police lines, ignored the safety of the public and destroyed social peace. Police once again declared during a press conference that their appeals will not be met by violence.

According to the police, more than 150 traffic lights were destroyed, many MTR lines and stations were affected and stopped, and buses were stopped and destroyed by rioters.

More masked rioters threw debris down the bridge, and took the Chinese University of Hong Kong's bow and arrow javelin and other materials. Police stressed that this kind of behavior is not the way to reach a solution, but only poses a very high threat to public safety.

"The police actively took action and went to the universities to do the dispersal. Some people have questioned that the police have no right to enter the school for law enforcement. I solemnly point out that we will not allow any place in Hong Kong to become a place for criminals to hide," said Kong Wing-cheung, senior superintendent of the Police Public Relations Branch.

The man who was set on fire by rioters on Monday had his upper body severely burned. He remains in critical condition after treatment while police carry on the investigation, said Kong.

Police said 206 men and 81 women  aged 12 to 82 years – most of whom are students – were arrested Monday for offenses including illegal assembly, possession of offensive weapons, attacking police, and critical damage.

Police emphasized that no civilized society can tolerate such violence, and the rioters must not rely on violence and eliminate different voices in order to gain a solution.

The police appeal to every citizen of Hong Kong to stand up, reject the violence and defend peace in Hong Kong.
