China's Luo Shuai won a silver medal in the senior men's individual competition in modern pentathlon at the AMPC Asian and Oceanian Championship on Tuesday to secure qualification for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. The Chinese athlete from Shanghai shone for the host country in Wuhan although he missed the gold medal by a whisker in the Olympic Qualifier event in Wuhan.

Lee Ji-hun of South Korea edged past his Chinese rival to win the gold medal and automatically booked a berth for the next year's Summer Olympic Games in the Japanese capital.

Earlier on the day, the first event was fencing, where Luo got 25-6 and ranked second. However, he saw 14 points being deducted from his overall points tally after he broke off his sword. But he could still hold on to his second place while Lee got a full mark of 300 points.

In the cross country running, Luo trailed by 44 seconds and finished second again. Luo later said, "for me, the most difficult part today is the equestrian show jumping. I think at the beginning, the coordination between me and the horse was a little bit messed up, but I tried my best to make it. I also got breakthrough in fencing. I am satisfied with the result, it's the best in the last six months.”

Luo's fellow compatriot and Chinese athlete Zhang Binibin won the bronze medal.
