Melbourne Zoo is celebrating the "birth" of a five-month-old koala.

The baby joey is the first to be born at the zoo in more than eight years and has just started to peek out from its mother's pouch.

Koalas have been listed as a vulnerable species in parts of Australia since their habitats are being cleared for suburban expansion.    

Increasingly isolated koala colonies have become inbred and diseased.
