With crucial developments taking place in the world economy, emerging markets and developing countries are increasingly a force driving profound change. Keeping this force on the right track while seeking out new momentum for growth is the key to a deepening of BRICS cooperation.

During a speech on Thursday at the BRICS summit in Brasilia, China's President Xi Jinping shared his proposals for the member countries to achieve the goal of championing and practicing multilateralism. He said the BRICS countries should work to foster a security environment of peace and stability; maintain close strategic dialogue; coordinate on diplomacy, security and counter-terrorism; uphold the purposes and principles of the international system that's centered on the United Nations and its Charter; and oppose hegemonies and power politics. This will all help to develop a more just and equitable international order, and will guarantee the development of the member countries.

The root cause of a lot of the problems in the world today is unbalanced development. The emerging technological and industrial revolution provides opportunities for the BRICS countries to address this inequality. That's why President Xi called on the five-member bloc to deepen its "Partnership on the New Industrial Revolution," and strive for more high-quality development through more productive cooperation in trade and investment, the digital economy, and connectivity. To achieve this goal, emerging markets need to remain united against protectionism, advocate for shared growth through discussion and collaboration, and prioritize development in a global policy framework.

In terms of people-to-people exchanges, the BRICS countries should promote mutual learning and deepen and broaden their people-to-people exchanges. In recent years, the five nations have made remarkable achievements in cultural and sports exchanges. President Xi proposed leveraging the "BRICS Plus" cooperation model as a platform for the bloc to build more bonds and have greater dialogue with more countries. As a journalist with Brazil's media conglomerate Grupo Bandeirantes de Comunicação said, the BRICS Plus model demonstrates China's sincerity in promoting global development.

China has pledged to open up even wider to the world by importing more goods and services, easing market access for foreign investment, and stepping up intellectual property protection. Through these efforts, it will reach out more and more to the world, including to emerging markets and developing countries, so that it can continue to be a source of energy driving global collaboration and mutually beneficial development.
