Chinese President Xi Jinping has made clear the stance of the Chinese government on Hong Kong. He said the most pressing task is to “end violence and chaos, and restore order.” Xi voiced firm support for those who bear their responsibilities in accordance with the law, including Chief Executive Carrie Lam who leads and governs the HKSAR government, the police officers in charge of enforcing the law, as well as the region's judicial bodies that punish violent criminals. Meanwhile, Hong Kong police have launched a murder investigation into the death of a sanitation worker, struck fatally in the head with a brick. The 70-year-old died in hospital on Thursday night after he was caught between pro- and anti-government protesters. His death marked the second fatality in a week of worsening violence.
