A Chinese diplomat in the UK has warned that if the UK continues to interfere in Hong Kong affairs, it would damage the China-UK relations, as violence in the world financial hub shows no sign of let-up after more than five months.
Rioters occupied roads and buildings at the Polytechnic University of Hong Kong over the weekend. On Sunday, they shot arrows and hurled petrol bombs from the campus at police, and set fire to the flyover connecting the campus and the Hung Hom MTR station. One police officer was shot in his leg with an arrow.
Ma Hui, minister of the Chinese embassy to the UK, condemned the recent violence on the BBC Newsnight program on Friday, urging Western countries to stop interfering in China's domestic affairs.
Earlier, China's Foreign Ministry spokesman Geng Shuang warned if the UK continues to add fuel to the fire, the UK itself will get burned. In response to a question to elaborate on the comment, Ma said what's happening in Hong Kong is violence, and if UK politicians or some members of government are condoning violence, it will be very bad for them and the bilateral relations.
If the violence won't be stopped, it would eventually hurt the interests of 300,000 British citizens and hundreds of British companies, he warned.
Ma said a good relationship of two countries is built on respect. "You need to treat your partners and colleagues with respect, and one of the most important things is not to interfere in each other's domestic affairs. China doesn't want the UK to meddle in Hong Kong affairs," Ma said.
He went on to say that some UK politicians failed to recognize the fact Hong Kong is no longer under British colonial rule and it is part of China – a special administrative region of the People's Republic of China.
