You can still install Google Apps on Huawei Mate 30
By Gong Zhe

Huawei's Mate 30 smartphone series are among the first types of gadgets banned from using U.S. software like the Google Play Store.

For European users, lacking the Play Store means a loss of their main app source, which could cripple the phone.

Since the release of the Mate 30, there's been consistent efforts to install Google Apps onto the phone. We at CGTN Digital tried one of the methods found from the internet and confirmed it worked, though the process can be tricky for users unfamiliar with software.

The method is not completely safe because third-party code is involved and we cannot verify its source for now. But if a Mate 30 user desperately needs to have one of the Google Apps, the method can actually help.

It took about 20 minutes to finish the process. Basically we downloaded the third-party code and installed it through manual system recovery. Then Google Apps can be downloaded including the Play Store, YouTube and others.

The underlying tech details cannot be confirmed by CGTN Digital alone. We reached out to the third-party code writer but have not yet received a reply.

Mate 30 users in China are posting the methods on Huawei's official fans forum, club.huawei.com.

Other Huawei smartphones like the P30 series are still officially supported by Google, with security updates arriving on time in a regular, monthly basis.

The U.S. government has yet to provide the public any proof to support its claim that Huawei devices pose a security threat.

As the country considers granting Huawei another license extension on Monday, there are some hopes emerging among European Huawei users of being able to once again use Google Apps.

The web version of the services like YouTube, Google Search, Gmail and Google Docs still work fine in the browser of the banned smartphone. Only some advanced features are not available on the web.
