Months of demonstrations in Hong Kong have seen millions of people take to the streets, and increasingly violent clashes breaking out between hardcore protesters and police. But, how much do you know about the protesters? Surveys were carried out among more than 3,000 participants of 12 protests by a team coordinated by the Chinese University of Hong Kong. They found that around half of the protesters are in their twenties, while people between 30 and 49 make up another quarter of the protesters. More than three quarters of the protesters have a college education or equivalent. Among the respondents, exactly half consider themselves to be middle class. When asked why they were demonstrating, 87 percent said they want the fugitive bill to be withdrawn, 95 percent expressed dissatisfaction with police handling of the protests, and 92 percent called for a commission to conduct an independent inquiry.
