Peng Liyuan, wife of Chinese President Xi Jinping and a goodwill ambassador of the World Health Organization for tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS, met with Bill Gates, co-chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, in Beijing on Thursday.

Peng hailed the progress that has been made in a program in Liangshan Yi Autonomous Prefecture, southwest China's Sichuan Province in tandem with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, concerning HIV/AIDS prevention and control as well as poverty reduction in the field of healthcare.

As one of the major approaches in China's poverty alleviation work, Peng expressed hope that the foundation could continue to show support and cooperate with China in relevant fields.

Peng noted China would also help developing countries including Africa to improve medical and healthcare levels and promote useful experience with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

During their meeting, the U.S. billionaire philanthropist spoke highly of China's achievements in healthcare-related fields and said the foundation is willing to further cooperate with China in fields including health, poverty reduction, social welfare, as well as assisting public health and agricultural development in developing countries.
