Over 60 new members were enrolled in the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), China's highest academic institution in natural sciences, on Friday.

The selection work for the new inductees started on January 1, 2019. After rounds of appraisals, 64 candidates, six of whom are female, were chosen. The average age of the new members is 55.7, with the youngest 42 and oldest 67.

Eleven were cited for their work in mathematics and physics, 10 for chemistry, 10 for life and medical sciences, 11 for earth sciences, seven for information technical sciences and 15 for technological sciences.

CAS also enrolled five candidates from national defense and security and four from emerging and interdisciplinary subjects, according to a notice issued in January by the institution.

The emerging and interdisciplinary subjects refer to physical biology, chemical biology, bio-imaging, environmental science, information and biomedicine and energy science.

There are also 20 newly elected international academicians from 12 countries, five of whom are from nations along the Belt and Road.

A CAS academician title is the highest national academic achievement in science and technology in China and a lifelong honor. New members are selected every two years.
