China's hybrid rice is flourishing in the southeastern African island nation of Madagascar, where the harvest of rice exceeded 10 tonnes per hectare this year, far outperforming the yield of local rice breed. Due to lack of financial support and agricultural infrastructure, the low rice yield of local breed in Madagascar posed local people with the threat of hunger. Over a decade ago, a team of Chinese agricultural experts went to Madagascar, with the simple goal of helping local farmers planting productive hybrid rice. And now the local farmers are enjoying the results of those experts' efforts.
