This year's Hong Kong district elections are attracting more attention than usual, partly because they're the first major elections since the protests broke out in June. In fact, about 10 percent of the entire electorate will vote for the first time in a district election. Although these are just local elections, they do matter – six seats in Hong Kong's Legislative Council are reserved for members of the district councils and they are also heavily involved in the election of the region's chief executive. To add more to the competitive nature of the elections, the majority of candidates are mainly from either the pro-establishment or opposition parties.
