The Swedish telecommunications company, Ericsson estimates that 1.5 billion users – about 40 percent of current global coverage – will have access to 5G wireless network technology by 2024. In the U.S., 5G fixed wireless broadband internet is currently available at only a handful of locations, while only select customers can access mobile 5G services. South Korea became the first country in Asia to usher in mobile 5G last year, following a collaboration between three local companies. One of the three, KT, plans to invest more than 20 billion U.S. dollars into the industry by 2023. NTT DOCOMO is Japan's largest wireless carrier. It's been experimenting with 5G since 2010, but only launched pre-commercial 5G services two months ago, with plans for an official roll-out next year. 5G networks are live in some European countries, while it's only a matter of months away for others.
