The European Parliament votes on the new European Commissioners

The European Parliament is to vote on the new European Commissioners on Wednesday after debates and hearings on the makeup of the new commission.

President-elect Ursula von der Leyen will present her team and the new commission's program. She needs a majority of the votes cast in the European Parliament to allow it to take office on December 1.

According to an EU statement, the plenary vote "is expected to bring to an end the long process of careful examination by Parliament of the proposed team of commissioners" and "ensure that the EU's executive body has the democratic legitimacy to act in the interest of Europeans."

Twenty-seven EU member states have made their nominations, but the United Kingdom failed to do so, leading the European Commission to begin infringement proceedings against the UK.
