Jamaal Franklin scored a game-high 44 points to help hosts Shanxi Loongs beat Liaoning Flying Leopards 110-106 in the Chinese Basketball Association (CBA) league on Wednesday.
Earlier, both sides scored 46 points in the first-half but Flying Leopards retook the lead with a dunk from Brandon Bass. Shanxi's Jamaal Franklin got hot and responded with two three-pointers, hitting nothing but the net. Loongs center Yan Pengfei also fired a three-pointer to extend the lead by four points.
However, with 9 seconds left in the match and the ball in Franklin's hand, the American hit a three-pointer in the final seconds to clinch a nail-biting victory for his side.
Incidentally, with Shanxi's perimeter defense, Liaoning missed an opportunity to force overtime when Liu Zhixuan committed a five-second violation and their three-game winning streak ended.
Meanwhile in another game, Jiangsu snatched a hard-fought single point victory over Fujian as they won the cliffhanger contest with a 127-126 scoreline.
Jiangsu were leading in the fourth quarter while Ty Lawson's breakthrough narrowed the gap. The former NBA guard fired a perimeter shot and Fujian took a two-point advantage. But Hu Longmao's foul directly gave Jiangsu the chance to level. The visitors scored by free throw but eventually failed to end the game. In overtime, reigning CBA MVP Wang Zhelin made a tough hook shot for Fujian to lead by one point with 2.8 seconds remaining.
But Shi Hongfei cut inside for the buzzer-beating layup thanks to a precise pass delivered by Yi Li. After the agonizing loss at home, Fujian remain second from bottom with only two wins, while Jiangsu now sit 11th in the league table.
Elsewhere, Jilin Northeast Tigers overwhelmed Sichuan Blue Whale 117-98 for their third consecutive win. After 10 rounds, Guangdong lead the table with 9 wins and 1 loss, Xinjiang and Zhejiang rank second and third with 8 wins and 2 losses, respectively. Jilin and Beijing have so far claimed 7 wins and 3 losses to sit fourth and fifth and Shanxi, Qingdao and Liaoning have grabbed the sixth, seventh and eighth places, respectively.
