Shanghai, the world-known international metropolis, is one of the most favored destinations in China. Renowned for the high-rise skyscrapers, it impresses numerous visitors by its modernity. However, there are some spots in the city that boast rustic and idyllic charms.

In Qingpu District, the southwestern part of the city, lies a village that has been listed as one of China's beautiful leisure villages this year. With lian meaning lotus and hu meaning lake, Lianhu summarizes perfectly the fine combination of lotus and lake.

Covering 4.25 square kilometers, Lianhu Village is the only village in Shanghai located inside a park. Local villagers used to make a living out of growing crops and selling lotus roots, but the poor economic conditions drove a large number of youngsters out of the village to work in the city, leaving behind mostly senior villagers.

Today, things changed greatly. Months of reconstruction brought a new look to the village with over 400 houses renovated, 16 public service spots newly built and the sewage problem properly handled. After that, locals could make full use of the rich resources to develop lotus culture and products.

Activities, like picking lotus flowers and experiencing the fun of tea-making by lotus leaves, are attracting an increasing number of visitors. The village is expected to welcome 200,000 tourists this year. Aside from economic growth, rural revitalization also brought many young people back to the village.

In Qingpu District, the most popular tourist destination is Zhujiajiao Ancient Town. Next time you visit there, you might consider stopping by Qingxi Country Park and Lianhu Village for one day or two to immerse yourself in the lotus culture, lake and local hospitality.
